Since mingling in the world of sex therapy, the Sex Down South Conference has been a hot topic. Therapists all over are aware of this yearly event. I looked it up a couple times, but I had no idea what to expect. Making the decision to volunteer was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. Not gonna lie, it kept me up way past my bedtime, but it was worth it!!!

Sex Down South is a conference that is geared towards allowing people to explore their sexuality in a safe space. This space provides for real conversation, education, and connection.  Everyone is welcome to be themselves and possibly gain some knowledge into some things sexually they have only dreamed about. I commend the creators Marla Stewart and Tia Mosley for taking the time to develop this space every year.

As a volunteer, I was a part of setting up and making sure that the staff had everything they needed. I also got to participate in the PJ/Lingerie party and the Big Bang Finale. From the beginning I noticed how welcoming everyone was, from the staff, to the other volunteers. Everyone was just excited to be a part of this event. Let me add, I’ve never seen so many packs of condoms and lube in my life…LOL!!!!

Friday Night Fun

Friday night I attended the PJ/Lingerie party and for some reason I was nervous. Don’t ask me why…just out of my comfort zone. Now in my mind I was going to a party, think drinking and dancing. Boy, was I wrong…it was more of an exhibition show with much to unveil. The creativity of the photographs and presentations were cool. Let me not forget the pajamas…let’s just say I definitely need to up my lingerie game.

Saturday Shenanigans

Saturday I showed up bright and early to help set up along with work the registration table. I hate that I didn’t get to sit in on the workshops, but I still enjoyed myself. There were multiple vendors with great merchandise and organizations who are fighting to provide room in the world for sexuality. That night I went to the Big Bang and enjoyed another night of showcases and conversation.

And on Sunday we rest…

By Sunday I was exhausted, but the biggest takeaway from Sex Down South was that of peace and safety. From my conversations with friends and other people of color, sexuality revolves around sex between a man and a woman. The common phrase when discussing things “outside of the box” is….black people don’t do that. Well let me tell you, my eyes have been opened and black people are out here doing the damn thing….and doing it well without a care in the world.

Certainly, this is an event that I encourage everyone to participate in. The only thing I would change is the amount of time I volunteer next year. Being a sex therapist, I feel that the workshops have a lot to offer for my growing knowledge and I missed out on that. Don’t get me wrong though, all topics discussed can be beneficial for any and everyone. By all means, check it out for yourself…. www.sexdownsouth.com.
